Pico-8 on Android Setup Guide

There is no way to play Pico-8 games natively on Android right now, and so you’re left with using Fake-08 (not great) or using Winlator and setting up Pico-8 through there for the best experience. That’s what this guide will help you do.

Download Winlator: https://github.com/brunodev85/winlator/releases. (Assets, .apk file of the latest release)

Install it and you can leave it unopened for right now.

Purchase and download Pico-8 (https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.phpYou will need the Windows ZIP version.)

It might be easiest to download it right onto your device, otherwise, just transfer the zip over to your Internal Storage, Downloads folder from your PC. Then, use an app like Solid Explorer File Manager (recommended) to extract the zip. (push and hold on the zip, three dots bottom right, extract)

You should see a pico-8 folder.

Now, open Winlator. Allow access to files and let it install System Files.

Click the Plus sign top right.

Name the container “Pico-8” (without quotations).

Set the screen size and aspect ratio to match your device, or, use custom, and set it manually.

For Graphics Driver, use VirGL (most devices), or Turnip (Adreno) for Snapdragon devices.

Audio Driver: ALSA

Under Win Components, then Direct Sound, make sure it’s Native (Windows).

Select the blue check mark bottom right to continue.

Run Pico-08

Click the three dots on the right of the Pico-8 container and select Run.

Head over to the D: drive, just by tapping and using your finger.

Open the Pico-8 folder and use two fingers to tap the pico8.exe file, and select Create shortcut.

Exit out of the container by going to the Windows start menu at the bottom left, and Exit Desktop then click Yes.

Booting directly into Splore

Click the three lines at the top left of Winlator and select Shortcuts.

Click the three dots on the right of the Pico-8 shortcut and select Settings.

Scroll down and swipe over on the tab list to Advanced, Exec Arguments and add “-splore” (without quotations).

Press OK and you’re set!

Loading and exiting Pico-8

It’s pretty quick. Open Winlator, head to Menu, Shortcuts and tap on the pico8 shortcut.

To exit a game, push Start and then Exit to Splore.

To exit everything, from either in-game or in Splore, push Start, Options, Shutdown Pico-8.
